UPDATE: Big Bend Topo – I have added some more data and digital elevation data (DEM) to the map. It now provides route elevation profiles. Attached is a view in Basecamp in the 3D mode. Adding DEM to the mapset allows 3D capability.

UPDATE Big Bend Topo – For those who request a working copy for Windows 8 and Windows 10 – I can now provide upon request. It does not require a complex installer, only copying files to a specific directory. Sorry for any delay….

Big Bend Topo Version 2.0  2.2 is available on request. More integrated POI’s and GPS verified positions of selected springs and other sites of interest.

Today I released Ver 1.7 of my 24k topo for MapSource, BaseCamp and Garmin GPSr’s. This is the 7 13th revision and is quite a mature edition. It is available by special request only. A screenshot from BaseCamp below gives an idea of detail and resolution. Click on the map for a larger version

This mapset contains many verified trails and off trail routes. waypoints and tracks have been recorded with GPS. The road, water, and contour data is public data. The latest 1/3 arc second data comes from The National Map. Other public and private sources of data complete the package.

This mapset was created and compiled with multiple applications. Including cgpsmapper, gpsmapedit, maptk, GMap, and JaVaWa tools.

I have inserted a Google Maps terrain map of the same area as a comparison

    Hi Richard, I am going full circle in life and am planning to recreate a two year photography project I did 40 years ago where I spent a week in BB monthly. The project begins Jan 2023. Your map sounds like a great resource to have in planning. I’d appreciate a link to your Big Bend topo map if possible for the MacOSX. Also what garmin system would you recommend. My current one is way old and I need to upgrade. BTW I replaced both my knees way back in 2006 after a very painful desert hike in BB and have not looked back sense. Thanks BadKnees. SYOTT….

      I sent you an email, however the topo map is not a .gpx file with trackpoints and waypoints. It is a full Garmin compatible mapset that needs to be transferred to a Garmin GPSr, typically using BaseCamp.

    Would you send me the Mac version, with a proper tdb file? The previous version won’t load on my Garmin with the bizarre error message “The map set is approximately 24.3 MB, but only 5397.8 MB is available in the destination.”, and according to some Googling:

    > It is typical error in mapsource when map have a wrong tdb file. I think that you modified a img but did not refresh a tdb file. Try copy only a img and typ files to new folder and then generate new mapsource kit with Gmaptool.

    Hope this helps.

    If not, perhaps just try resending me the current version of the file, maybe that’ll resolve the problem?

    My compliments on your web site — great design, great content.

    On our first visit to Big Bend a few years back I managed to get our Jetta Wagon TDI stuck in the sand going out to Dagger Flats. I am still not sure if my wife sees me as a fool for getting stuck or a hero for extracting it. 🙂

    Next spring we are planning to return with a 4×4 and look forward to seeing more of the park. I would appreciate a link to your Garmin topo so I can preload our 76csx with POIs and start to plan our hikes.

    I plan to visit Big Bend later this year to drive some of the scenic trails in my 4×4 and have been looking for a good map to use with my Garmin GPSmap62S. It looks like you have put a lot of time and effort into making your map, and if you could provide a copy for my use it would be very much appreciated.
    I’m a new Garmin user, so any advice you can offer on how to install the map would be appreciated.

    Hi BK,

    I’m taking my son and some friends from Germany and my Brittany on a Big Bend State Park trek — up onto Mesa de Anguila. Does your data set include that area? I don’t need the whole SP, just from Lajitas southward. I could really use a reliable detailed topo to keep us oriented to the terrain. It’s beautiful, but if I remember correctly from the last time I was there — in 1996, it’s minimally marked and sparsely traveled. Anything you can provide would be muchly appreciated.

    I’m using a Garmin eTrex 20, loading data to the unit through BaseCamp.

    Would you be so kind as to share your topo link with me as well? I visit the Bend at least twice a year and have only been using the map that came loaded on my Etrex 30. I would really like to improve on that.

    My wife and I are headed out tomorrow for some hiking in Big Bend for a whole week. We are looking for trail maps for my eTrex Legend Cx. I use MapSource v6.16.3 to load it, and I’m not very tech savvy. Is your Big Bend map still available upon request, and do you know if it would be compatible with my Legend Cx? If it is and if it is, I would be very appreciative if you let me know how I can get it. Your map appears to be the exact info I was able to find for the NPs in Utah, but have not been able to find for Big Bend. Thanks.
