The Contest
Bullock Museum Photo Contest – In honor of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the National Park Service, the Bullock Museum in Austin, Texas is sponsoring an exhibition highlighting Big Bend National Park. The exhibition will present artifacts and photographs that the showcase the beauty of Texas’ most treasured jewel. The museum has reached out to individuals to submit photographs for the exhibition. As a long time visitor and enthusiast, I have a significant portfolio of unique and wide ranging photos of the park. Therefore it seemed like I could find something that would provide a perspective that few casual visitors have ever seen. I searched my archives to find the perfect shot for the exhibition. “Journey into Big Bend”.
In order to elicit quality photos, a Bullock Museum Photo Contest was created. The contest photographs would be judged based on “creativity and artistry, where the photograph was taken in the park (diversity of locations in the park), photograph quality, suitability for the exhibition, and how the photograph represents a unique aspect (for example, wildlife, vistas, plant life, people) of Big Bend National Park.”
The Photos
After a brief search, I selected a three photos for submission. After that I submitted one wildlife and two scenic photos. As a result the judges selected one of my photos for display. The photo below – captioned “Chisos Snowfall”, captured an infrequent snow event in the desert mountains of Big Bend. Although snow is not unusual it usually occurs as a light dusting.
The Winner
The event I captured in “Chisos Snowfall”, was more significant. As a result snow blanketed the mountains and foothills up to a foot deep in some places. After that the morning arrived with blue skies and brilliant sun. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. The Museum will install rotations of six (6) photographs per month. April 22, May 23, June 20, July 18, and August 15, 2016. My photo will be on display at the museum from June 20th – July 17th 2016.
