Trip Report – Big Bend Oct 29 2012

Trip Report – Big Bend Oct 29 2012 – Spent a cold night (39 F) in the Basin, but awoke refreshed and ready. I had fresh GROUND coffee. (I brought a coffee grinder and some good beans) But I had to use the electrical outlet in the restroom because my inverter in my truck wouldn’t kick the grinder.

I’ve always wanted to check out Vernon Bailey Spring and this looked like a perfect morning to do it. I had checked out Ash Spring in the same area once before and found it dry and wasn’t expecting much water at Bailey on this hike.

I loaded up food, water and my camera and drove to the Croton Springs road and parked there for the day. Next I struck out south across the desert and reached the wash that would lead me up to place where spring was marked on the topographic map. The hike is pretty with lots of water. Water flowed about 300 yards downstream before disappearing into the gravel and sand wash. There were also bear tracks around the spring. This day logged 7 1/2 miles round trip. Additionally just enough to limber up for tomorrow.

I’ve attached a map and the .gpx for those who like that. Stay tuned.
