Road Trip – San Antonio Mission Trail

San Antonio Mission Trail – I was in need of a road trip and had organized a trip to Seminole Canyon in Val Verde Co. TX to view Pecos River rock art. Therefore on the way, I stopped to visit the Spanish Missions established in San Antonio in the late 1600’s. I recommend this for any Texas history buff. Lastly I hope you enjoy the photos, and feel free to leave any comments.

Beginning in 1690 the Spanish established six missions in what is now East Texas. However the Spanish needed a way station between these and their source of supply to the west. This need prompted the relocation of an existing mission San Francisco Solano. The mission was moved from Coahuila to the San Antonio River. In addition they renamed it San Antonio de Valero. This mission is now known as the Alamo. After that the Spanish founded additional missions south of the Alamo. These are part of the San Antonio Mission Trail that I visited.

San Antonio, Missions

During my stop in San Antonio I visited four missions. Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. Each is unique. The missions can be reached by car or a walking/biking trail.

The National Park Service web page has a wealth of information to help you plan a visit. – San Antonio Missions
