Egret Convention from the Archives

I found what seems to me an Egret Convention from the Archives.I chanced upon a loose group of Snowy Egrets, along with other species, during the early part of the fall migration. Although there were a few mixed Ibises and Herons in the buch, It consisted almost entirely of Snowy Egrets. While Snowys tend to congregate at suitable habitat, this was something different. During the migration, large numbers are moving and resting in coastal marshes. They feed and rest and then push on when the next available North wind gives them a push. Strong South winds this time of year tend to stack up many migrants waiting for a wind shift.Snowy Egrets are the most common Egret found in the United States and were once endangered….killed for long white plumes that grow during the breeding season. The plumes were much sought after by the fashion industry. They were used to adorn fashion accessories, particularly for women’s hats. The population was devastated in the late 1800’s by plume hunters. Once protection was initiated the Snowy has recovered. There may be a larger population than ever before. It appears as though their range has expanded upon recovery and may still be continuing to.
