Big Bend Summer 2016

Big Bend Summer images captured in Big Bend National Park during three separate backpacking trips in the summer of 2016. It was an exceptionally wet year and the park was healthy and green.

The contrast between summer and winter in Big Bend are striking. Summer is the rainy season. As a result the desert and mounts burst with green. I took advantage of this rainfall bounty. I squeezed in three trips in the Big Bend Summer 2016. All of the trips focused on the High Chisos complex. Wildlife was abundant and active as a result of the ideal conditions.

The images below are a collection of many captured during the hikes. The links below chronicle each hike with descriptions, images and maps.

There is no bad time to visit Big Bend. Each season presents a different set of conditions. Additionally each season dictates the best opportunities for the conditions. Summer is generally avoided by the crowds. The low desert is exceptionally hot and difficult to hike safely. In contrast, the High Chisos Mountains offer an escape from the heat. Pleasant temperatures, and an explosion of green make mountain hikes desirable.

Backpacking in the mountains allowed me to be in place for sunrise and sunset. These “golden hour” times are a photographer’s favorite time of the day. Light, shadow and color allow for striking photos.
