Highest Speed Limit – The Need for Speed

Highest Speed Limit

Texas transportation engineers determined that 85% of drivers on the two segments of I-10 and I-20 were averaging 80 mph.  5 mph above the current 75-mph speed limit. So officials reasoned that raising the limit would simply be a bow to reality.

This photo was taken on a stretch of I-10 between Junction and Kerrville, TX. The 80 mph section starts just east of El Paso and stretches through a very rural part of the state for 432 miles. Finally, stepping back down to 75 mph just west of Kerrville, TX. This reduces time on the road over this section by at least 1 hr.

I have driven this section many, many times. It is a practical and safe speed for this section of I-10, making this one of the Highest Speed Limit roads in the Nation. In addition to the I-10 segment. there is also an 89 miles stretch of Interstate 20 between Monahans and the I-10 junction that is 80 mph.
