Went to Austin today and took a few minutes out to pay homage to the late, great Stevie Ray. In 1985, he was named an honorary admiral in the Texas Navy. In 1991, Texas governor Ann Richards proclaimed October 3, Vaughan’s birthday, to be “Stevie Ray Vaughan Day”. The bigger than life sized statue of Vaughn is located on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake a bare 100 yards away from where Stevie played his last concert in Austin in 1990. Wearing a serape and cowboy boots, he faces the jogging path along the lake and is paid tribute by many joggers as they pass. Stevie left us in 1990, the victim of a helicopter crash in Wisconsin at the age of 35. We miss him dearly.
