Balanced Rock
Balanced rock – Grapevine Hills Big Bend NP

Balanced rock located in the Grapevine Hills, Big Bend National Park,  is a massive boulder perched on two pedestals. This is a naturally occurring geological formation. A large rock or boulder, sometimes of substantial size, resting on other rocks that often look precariously balanced. In reality, these rocks only appear to be balancing but are in fact firmly connected to a base rock by a pedestal or in this case wedged firmly in place. These look like impossibly stacked boulders, but are in reality the results of millions of years of weathering and erosion. There are many similar rocks in Big Bend National. I have captured photos of some other prominent ones and they can be seen in my post – A Desert and a Spring. Balanced rocks make great photo opportunities with people, sunsets and the night sky.

Another view

I have visited the Balanced Rock many times over the years. The hike through the Grapevine Hills is short, but very scenic. It is a good late afternoon hike. The setting sun during the “golden hour” allows for some really nice photos. Here are some additional pictures from a spring trip in 2018.
