Texas Thanksgiving

The last few days found me in Sonora TX on a  friend’s ranch. Texas Thanksgiving tradition means hunting, turkey and pecan pie. While the deer are in rut, the pecans have been harvested we all take time to visit family and friends. I made a few stops on the way home to take some photos on a beautiful Texas fall day. Although the morning was cold and foggy (42 F) on the ranch, the fog gave way to a glorious blue sky day.

Of note was a stop at  Fort McKavett Historic Site in Menard County, Texas. I also made a stop at the ruins of the San Saba Mission/Presidio in Menard TX. Fort McKavett was one of a series of frontier forts. It was established in 1852 to protect settlers from Indian raids. Additionally Fort McKavett was home to soldiers from all four of the famous Buffalo Soldier regiments. Fort McKavett buildings are the most well-preserved of the Texas frontier forts. Finally If you ever get near this out of the way site, a visit is well worth your time.
