Alligators in Texas

Alligators in Texas are a common sight to those who spend any time visiting wetlands in Texas. Although they are most abundant along the coastal plain, the can be found in almost any marsh, pond or lake in the eastern part of the state. Found mainly in fresh water, Alligators can also tolerate brackish waters in tidal creeks and bayous as well.

When searching these varied wetlands for migrating and resident birdlife, I encounter numerous ‘gators on a regular basis. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department estimates up to 500,000 alligators reside the state. It’s not surprising that I observe them so frequently considering I frequent their habitat so often.

This post is not intended to detail the life history or detailed distribution, however it should be noted that Alligators in Texas were once close to extinction. The passage of the Texas Endangered Species Act in 1973 sparked a rapid comeback and fully recovery. As a result the population of alligators is healthy and thriving in Eastern Texas.

Although the alligator can present a danger to people and pets, this is not the norm. However human development near alligator habitat is commonplace and can invite risks. In general, alligators are usually not aggressive unless provoked and can be very protective of a nest and newly hatched young. It is always best to give alligators a wide berth and observe from a safe distance. Not only is it unsafe, but it is illegal to harass, provoke or feed free ranging alligators in Texas. In the event that an alligator becomes a danger to humans, Texas Parks & Wildlife should be contacted to assess the possibility of removal.

The rest of my post is dedicated to images of some of the individuals I’ve encountered along the way. Fortunately where I live “nuisance” alligators are very rare. There is sufficient habitat to keep them away from most neighborhoods. Most of the images below were captured at coastal prairie locations in protected habitat. Some of the images were caught in local area public parks where interaction is at the highest risk level.

The photo below shows a large male alligator issuing a mating call. The mating call is a loud bellowing. The lower frequencies of the mating call vibrate the water around the alligator causing water to erupt like a fountains.

Common sense and reasonable caution is advised, but should you encounter alligators during your wanderings, take the time to observe and enjoy the ancient reptilian….from a distance.

    1. 12:03 AM? is that a typo or a night sighting. I don’t post 3rd party pictures, however you could fill out an Ebird checklist and submit photos there.
