Jenbach Austria

Another Daily Archive photo – Austria. On route to Innsbruck from Munich, I transited the small town of Jenbach, Austria. Jenbach is an old town, with the earliest settlements as far back to the end of the Bronze Age. It is a tidy place that served as an important rail hub during WWII. The town was bombed for a time by the allies, to prevent the German Army from shipping war material through Austria into Italy. Jenbach is located along the Inn river about 20 miles from Innsbruck.  The railway runs south beyond Innsbruck, ultimately crossing the Alps through Brenner Pass into Italy.

When the train stopped at the station. I had just enough time on the stop, to jump out and grab a cup of coffee and a snack – And record a quick photo!

The station in Jenbach is a mainline station of The Austrian Federal Railways. Additionally it it is the terminal for two narrow gauge lines. Both of the narrow gauge lines operate a steam service. The Achenseebahn line full time steam service on Europe’s oldest un-electrified track. The Achensee Railway runs about 4 miles between Jenbach and Lake Achensee. It is the oldest cog railway in Europe which is still steam operated.

More info on the Achensee Railway can be found here.
