Daily Photo from the Archive – Hong Kong

Daily Photo from the Archive – Hong Kong.  Eating places are ubiquitous in Asia and Hong Kong is no exception. It seems like everyone eats out, as evidenced by the this example of a waterfront eatery. The food is fresh, good and cheap. I was in Hong Kong multiple times in the 1980’s.There as never a problem finding something to eat. The food is varied with lots of vegetables, noodles, rice and seafood. After a long day walking the streets of Kowloon, it was easy to pop in somewhere and grab a quick bowl of something. These waterfront kitchens were mobile and did a brisk business with workers at the docks and a lot of passers-by.  I made many trips to the waterfront during my stay and was never disappointed by the variety and quality of the offerings. I have found some of best food in my travels, comes from the small “hawker” stands. Asia abounds with these stands and Hong Kong was no exception. Unfortunately, it appears as though regulation will ultimately shutdown the impromptu vendors. The government now regulates hawker licensing under the “Pleasant Environment” initiatives. Public markets, hawker control, garbage collection and recycling are under the watchful eye of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
