Brazoria morning light…and a Whooping Crane

As usual an early morning trip to Brazoria NWR. The light was soft and the marsh was alive with mosquitos. A few birds were present but it is still a bit early in the migration for large numbers if waders and ducks. I did see 3 Whooping Cranes flying at the edge of the refuge when I left… a rare sight. Each fall, the cranes fly from their summer range in Canada. Most head for Texas and finish their migration in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. These birds may have been passing through on this segment of the journey. Multiple sights of Whooping Cranes (with photos) have occurred over the years in Brazoria, so it’s not unheard of. It is a good sighting though and it’s great to see these magnificent rare cranes.
