A Trip to Brazoria NWR – Hello my old friends

A strong cold front pushed off the Texas coast last night with the possibility of bringing some new migrants with it. An early morning trip revealed more ducks and shorebirds, but nothing exceptional. It was a very cold and blustery day. As a result many of the birds sheltered along shorelines to avoid the wind. With a little planning and stealth, I managed to capture a few good images despite the chilling wind.

In particular I was fortunate to get some good shots of a Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway) . This guy was very obliging and sat quietly on a fence post at the refuge boundary. The Caracara gave me ample opportunity to capture some well composed images. In addition the Black bellied Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were cooperative and I captured a flight photo of one adult coming in for a landing and a close up group in the shallow water.

I made many trips to the Coastal Refuge System complex during the fall migration of 2012. The density of birdlife can be spectacular during the migration both in quantity and diversity of species. I have compiled a page with images from many these trips that can be viewed from my Brazoria NWR Photo Collection.
