Bird Migration – Texas Gulf Coast Migrant Photos – Brazoria NWR

Bird Migration is just ramping up along the Texas Gulf. I took a drive to Brazoria NWR the coast today (again), to chronicle the arrival of more migrants. Many of the birds that summer and breed in Canada and the northern United States migrate south along the Gulf of Mexico and some over winter there. A less severe winter climate and the availability of more food sources are the primary reasons for this movement.

There are more than 300 species of birds that nest in the United States and Canada and migrate to the West Indies or Central and South America.  Many of these Neo-tropical migrants use the Texas Gulf Coast as a landmark in their journey. Likewise some use it as a resting point before a nonstop crossing of the Gulf of Mexico. Although many bird migration players haven’t arrived yet, the numbers are rapidly increasing. In addition the sheer number of egrets, ibises, and spoonbills was quite a sight.  I hope you enjoy these. Leave a comment if you feel like it.
