Trip Report update Big Bend National Park Oct 30, 2012

Big Bend National Park today consisted of and early morning trip to the desert to shoot some sunrise hoodoo pictures. Additionally a trip on the Juniper Canyon road to check out some springs west of Glenn Spring.

After shooting the hoodoos north of Panther Junction, I drove the Glenn Spring Road until turning west on the Juniper Canyon Road. I struck out south from my parking place along the Juniper Canyon Road. Following an old road that was barely discernible. It led me to an old windmill, water tank, and corral. The ruins are remnants of a long gone ranching operation. My hike crossed multiple steep, wide washes and I ended up on a hill overlooking a large area of brush, grass and trees that marked the site of Snippur Spring. I could not get to the heart of the spring As hard as I tried. The tangled grapevines, catclaw and thickets thwarted every effort I attempted. I am positive water could be found there….if one could just get to it…

After leaving Snippur Spring I worked my way to another spring along a line that is marked on the topo for this area. I arrived at the marked location of Sand Spring. But all I found was sand. The site name is appropriate. It doesn’t appear as though there has been any water at this site for a long time. I decided to head back at this point and cross all the washes…again

The hike today was only 4 miles but with all the washes I crossed it seemed like 10. No shade except at the spring either.
