Trip Report Update Big Bend – Oct 31 2012 – Loop around the South Rim

I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do until I awoke this morning and decided then that a day hike. A Loop around the South Rim was the plan. I started out early in the dark under headlamp and reached the SW Rim by 10:00. It was a long day and my knees will probably suffer for it, but it was a nice day. The weather was fantastic, but was hazy, as it seems to be frequently these days. I only saw a group of three people and a solo hiker during the whole trip.

I can’t count how many times I have made the journey to the Rim, but it still is a great hike, a great view and one of the finest places one could be. This hike is about 13 miles in length with significant elevation change. It is arguably the best hike in the state of Texas. An overnight backpacking trip is best. However a day hike is another option. Check out my Trip Reports page to see details of other trips made to the South Rim. Included are additional day hikes and multi day backpacking trips. Most are image heavy and provide additional details and points of interest on the route. Below are a few images of the day and a GPS track file that captures a loop around the South Rim. You can download and study in your favorite mapping program or Google Earth.
