Lower Pecos Rock Art – Halo Shelter

Updated: Feb 8th – Added a gallery with many additional pictures on this part of my trip

Firstly I was lucky enough to get a little time to make a trip to West Texas again this week. My first stop was an overnight in Seminole Canyon State Park and a hike to the Halo Shelter on private property, to view some Lower Pecos Rock Art at the Halo Shelter. The Halo Shelter has some very fine examples of paleo rock art and I have a picture or two to post. I’m currently sitting at Campsite # 17 and the wireless connection works here! In addition very cool and good showers too.

After spending a pleasant night at Seminole canyon, I made the short drive to Comstock to meet up with the rest of my group. The hike in to reach the shelter is short but steep. The shelter and murals are in excellent conditions. The art is sharp and brilliantly colored. Of the many shelters I have visited, I believe the Halo Shelter is in the best condition. The depth and orientation of the shelter appears to be optimal for the preservation of the art.

Browse the photos below. Comments are questions are welcome. Enjoy!

  1. I have been to the Halo many times. The pictographs remind me of Bill Worrell,s bronze Castings on Display in Mason Tx at Sandstone Cellars. If you are passing through Mason Tx stop and have a look, and a glass of wine. Where did you get the pic of the “ Shaman” featured above? Obviously not at the Rye’s n Sons Ranch. Cheers.

    1. I really like the Halo Shelter. The colors are very vibrant and well preserved.
If you’re talking about the Shaman picture under the stars, that was taken at Seminole Canyon State Park.
