In Big Bend National Park, along the southwest slopes of Emory Peak, is a small grove of Texas quaking aspens. The southernmost stand in the United States. These trees are the last few remnants from ancient, wetter times thousands of years ago. You can find Texas quaking aspen trees in only a few places in the state. Only in the high Chisos, Davis and Guadalupe mountains. Aspens are North America’s most widely distributed tree. For example they are found from the arctic to Mexico in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are also America’s liveliest tree. Even a slight breeze will cause the round leaves to tremble.
Look just below and left of center and see if you can pick them out. Look at the cluster of boulders at the base of the talus. Although the location is not inaccessible, it is difficult to get to. One of these days I might climb up and get a better look.
Update : One of these days finally came. On a recent trip to Big Bend I did climb up to get a better look. The Texas quaking aspens are there. Check out my latest post and some photos and comments
You can see them from the trail to the South Rim.
You can, but it requires a scramble through the boulder field to reach them.
I have seen them myself with binoculars from the trail, but I just can’t pick them out in this photo …
Yeah, pretty hard to see…but they are there:)
