Big Bend Feb 2013 – The Desert and a Mountain

I just returned from a week long trip to Seminole Canyon TX and Big Bend National Park. I have a lot of photos to go through and post, plus a trip report is in order. It will take some time, but here are a few to get you started. Comments welcome. Above all the weather was perfect for early February. The nights were cold, but not unbearable. Additionally the days were pleasantly warm with brilliant blue skies. There was enough cloud to give the vast sky a wonderful texture and dapple the landscape in textured shadows. Views from Croton Peak and Ash Creek are highlighted below and a full set of trip reports are coming.

February can be a perfect month to hike the lower elevations in the park. Cool weather makes it possible to make extended hikes that would not be possible in the summer heat. I took advantage of this and to plan my longest hikes on this trip. The Ash Creek hike was approximately twelve miles. Certainly this hike would be very uncomfortable during the summer months. Being able to take extend desert hikes opens up a huge area of the park. Although summer is still a great time to be in Big Bend, I tend to limit most of my hikes to the Chisos Mountains during the hottest time of year.

Also stayed tuned for a full trip report of a couple of great hikes. Finally here are a few teaser photos to enjoy from my Big Bend Feb 2013 – The Desert and a Mountain trip.
