Caverns of Sonora Texas Treasure

The Caverns of Sonora are a Texas treasure. Furthermore the Cavern is on the register of National Natural Landmarks. The caverns are located about 8 miles southwest of Sonora, Texas in Sutton County on the western edge of the Texas Hill Country.

The tour is about 2 miles long and descends about 150 feet below the entrance. The caverns have about 7 miles of explored passageways. The cave is a “warm” cave. The temperature is about 70 degrees, but the high humidity (98%) makes it feel much warmer.

On a recent trip to Sonora, I took the time to fit in a visit to the caves. Initially I checked in for a guided tour. After that I walked the grounds. RV hookups and tent campsites are available for overnight stays. The campground is shaded and quiet. Showers and restrooms are good too.

To begin with the descent into the Caverns of Sonora passes through an enlargement of the natural entrance. Drab limestone passages do not hint at the more spectacular sights seen deeper in the cave.

After pushing deeper, the cavern reveals an amazing array of formations and crystalline structures. These are a delight to the eye and the camera. The general tour does not permit tripods. However, you can arrange a photo tour. So this allows a photographer to bring a tripod. Instead I carried a flash and was able to capture acceptable photos.

Additionally the caverns have living formations and some water in the deeper reaches.

The Tour

The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and the guides are knowledgeable and friendly. They relate history and geology of the caverns during the entirety of the tour. My tour consisted of 6 people and was leisurely and relaxed.

Later I felt good to get outside in the dry air in this part of Texas after 2 hours in the high humidity,

In conclusion, I would recommend a visit to the Caverns of Sonora. Above all West Texas is a land of contrast and wonder. The vast area conceals secrets underground and above.

The cavern is open daily year round, and is only closed on Christmas Day. The cavern website has additional information.
