While in England I wanted to see Castles and Dungeons. I visited one of the finest castles in the Midlands – Warwick Castle. Pronounced WAR-ICK, it is a medieval castle on the River Avon, about 20 miles south of Coventry, in Warwickshire. Warwick is located conveniently close to my in-laws home and it is just a short drive to the castle from there. The castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 was used as a fortification until the early 17th century when it was converted to a country house. It was owned by the Greville family, who became earls of Warwick in 1759, until 1978. It was then bought by the Tussauds Group. In 2007, the Tussauds Group merged with Merlin Entertainments, which is the current owner of Warwick Castle. The castle is protected against any changes and is protected as a Historical Monument under English monument laws. The nearby town of Warwick, is a nice place to visit after you check out the castle. There was a fire in 1694 that destroyed the majority of medieval structures in the town. Most of the existing structures post date that event. The Castles and Dungeons are complete with a drawbridge and moat, towers and tools of torture. It is well worth a visit if you ever end up in that area of England.
