Kona Sunset

This scan from the past is a vivid example of a how beautiful a Hawaiian Kona sunset can be. Some of Hawaii’s best sunsets are visible  the Big Island’s Kona coast. The coastline faces west and has an unobstructed view to the horizon. Pick a place with a nice foreground, throw in a couple of palms, and you have the perfect mix.

Exposure can be a little tricky, but with practice you can capture the true brilliance of a great sunset. The photo was taken many years ago with film and later scanned, so the quality is not spectacular. However the content is. This photo was taken near Keauhou Bay, south of Kona-Kailua. As the sun set over the Pacific the clouds lit up with this spectacular blaze of reds and oranges.

If you are lucky enough to visit the west coast of the Big Island, take time to see the rest of it. Volcanoes National Park, and Akaka Falls State Park are a must see. Don’t miss Waipio Valley and the drive from there to Hilo.

Check out some of a very old video I have of Hawaii at these links: Hawaii Waterfalls. For a little bit on Waipio Valley head over to Waipio Valley from my archives

Finally, Hawaii has great weather, stunning sights and beaches and is 100% relaxing. Don’t miss it.
