Great Barrier Reef Cod Hole – Big Grouper – Clear Water

The Great Barrier Reef Cod Hole is a unique place near Ribbon Reef #10 – Great Barrier Reef Australia. These scans were made from photos taken on 2 trips on live-aboard charter boats. Live-aboard is the best way to experience the Great Barrier Reef, there is just too much distance for day trips. The Great Barrier Reef Cod Hole is a place made famous by underwater photographers, Rod and Valerie Taylor. The were the first to document this gathering of 300 lb Potato Cod (groupers.) The group is acclimated to divers after years of being hand fed. They readily approach and make great photo subjects. While not dangerous, their large size and lack of fear requires a bit of caution to avoid being battered by a hungry fish. The water is intensely clear on the incoming tide, but the current can be strong as the tide rushes through a pass in the reef. Although a great dive, the true gem in Australia is the oceanic atolls in the Coral Sea -Visit this link for some photos of  Bougainville and Osprey Reefs. Both of these reefs hold Big Potato Cod, but they are not concentrated in a single spot like the Cod Hole. If you want some great dives get yourself to the Great Barrier Reef Cod Hole. You won’t be disappointed.
