Meyers Spring Rock Art

A private ranch northeast of Dryden, Texas shelters Meyers Spring Rock Art. Furthermore the canvas for this mural is a limestone shelter near the reliable water source Meyers Spring. Lower Pecos people, and  modern era Native American tribes utilized this spring. Later U.S. military outposts and current day ranchers utilized this spring. The oldest art on the pictograph panel is Lower Pecos River Style 3500 years old. Later more modern historic art covers much of the Lower Pecos style. Certainly this includes Native American art mostly from the period that followed the contact between European settlers and the Native Americans who used this site. Depictions of indigenous people on horseback are the earliest examples of the introduction of horses to North America by the Spanish in the 15th and 16th century.

In the late 1870s and early 1880s the United States Army occupied Fort Meyers near the spring under the command of Lt. John L. Bullis. A Black Seminole soldier serving at Fort Meyers named Meyers Canyon and spring. In addition Fort Meyers was a station for;Black Seminole scouts. They protected local settlers from Indian attack. Later after his retirement, Bullis lived near Meyers Canyon and built a stone reservoir next to the spring in 1901. Later Meyers Spring site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.  # 78002985.

The Texas Rock Art Foundation sponsored this trip. In addition it was;gratefully supported by the landowner. Further details of their good work in education and preservation can be found here.

  1. Is there more information regarding the pictograph to the left of the Hopi Sun Symbol…the “Eagle. ..or is it possibly a “Thunderbird” ? I’m trying to research its origins. Was it ever dated?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Best,
    Judy

    1. I believe the pictographs you refer to are from the historic period. The majority of the art at Meyers Spring is attributed to Plains Indians who were latecomers to the region.

How far from Big Bend National Park is this ranch located. It looks like the rock art is fantastic.

    Thank you
