Ruby Throated Hummingbirds Texas

Ruby Throated Hummingbirds Texas visitors gather along the Texas coast during August and September. They take off for their final flight to the south after feeding constantly . Their route takes them over the Gulf of Mexico or an overland through Mexico. Their winter home is in Central America.

I’ve had a feeder up since the end of July and took a few pictures and some video. The birds are very territorial right now. As a result they are  frantically guarding the feeder, Performing aerial combat with each other, guarding the feeder. Furthermore I believe they are loading up on calories for the final flight south for the winter. Although most will be gone soon,  the occasional Black Chinned, and Rufous hummingbirds will visit in the winter. In addition other species are found in Houston in the winter occasionally. These include Allen’s, Anna’s, Broad-tailed and Buff-bellied Hummingbirds. These little guys are fun to watch. Additionally I’ve embedded a video clip of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds in Texas for your viewing. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I now keep my feeders up year around. This past winter I had two hummingbirds stay with me for the entire winter. Details and photos can be found in my 2019 post – Texas Winter Hummingbirds

  1. Your photos are quite impressive, Richard.
Hummingbirds are somewhat difficult subjects for the camera to adequately capture…
You have, nevertheless, been quite successful in doing such.
    Good stuff!
